Long Time No See…

Last Updated: December 4, 2008

Wow! I can’t believe it’s been more than a month since I’ve posted. Sorry for the long silence, everyone, but we’ve been busy here at Prospect Genius. Between adding a number of new customers and working to develop our new Premium Package (more on that later) our whole team has had their hands full. Enough with excuses, though, I’m ready to dive right in and welcome just a few of our new members.

Let’s begin with RotorMatic Sewer and Drain Cleaning Service, located in Albany, NY. They’re a one-stop shop for all your plumbing needs, from water heater repair and installation to pipe cleaning and maintenance. RotorMatic also provides complete pipe thawing services, which could come in handy this winter! Hopefully your pipes won’t freeze, but if they do, RotorMatic can safely and quickly thaw them out.

Next we have Bostonian Design Group, which, as their name implies, specializes in interior design work in the Boston metro area. These guys do gorgeous renovation work; their hardwood floors and stone countertops are especially beautiful. And, if you need organizational help, Bostonian Design Group also creates and installs custom closet organization systems. With one of these attractive and functional storage systems your closet will never be cluttered again!

Also located in the greater Boston area, let’s welcome East Coast Flooring. This locally owned business focuses on all types of flooring, from laminate and linoleum to high-end hardwood. East Coast Flooring works with both residential and commercial customers, but they have a particular expertise in turning around rental properties fast! If you’re in the area, stop by their showroom to see samples of their carpeting and other flooring products and chat with their experienced sales staff.

Headquartered in the balmy Birmingham, Alabama, region, Southern Experts HVAC is truly an expert at all things heating and cooling. They specialize in air conditioner repair and installation as well as furnace maintenance and installation. Southern Experts has the experience and know-how to work on all types of HVAC systems, including heat pumps. They even install blown attic insulation to keep your home extra cozy!

Last but certainly not least, we have Moyer Catering, providing delicious food to the greater Reading, PA, area for 30 years. Specializing in both event catering and wedding catering, they provide superior food, service, and clean up. Whether they’re cooking up barbecue for a corporate luau or serving filet mignon at a wedding reception, Moyer Catering is sure to delight your taste buds.

Well, that’s all I have time for now, but hopefully I won’t be gone so long next time. If you get the chance, be sure to say hi to all of the new businesses in the Prospect Genius community!

Still Rolling in October…

Last Updated: October 28, 2008

October has been a busy month–and it’s not even over yet. I just wanted to take a quick break to welcome two new friends to the Prospect Genius community. Sorry to all the people I don’t have time to mention!

First let’s swing out to beautiful Portland, OR, region to announce Chrisman Plumbing. From faucet repair to water heater maintenance and installation to sewer and drain cleaning, they can do everything. Here’s hoping you never need any emergency plumbing services, but if you do, you’ll be in good hands with Chrisman Plumbing!

Then, in the Albany, NY, area we have the talented folks at Let Me Organize You. These guys are professional organizers: they declutter and arrange your home to make it feel bigger, more comfortable, and cleaner. Who couldn’t use some help with that! And, they also provide home staging services to help your home sell fast in this sluggish real estate market, which, frankly, sounds great to me…

Well, that’s all I have time for at the moment. Be sure to welcome these new folks–and all the others I didn’t have a chance to mention–into our Prospect Genius community.

New Friends in Autumn

Last Updated: October 9, 2008

Hello again! Sorry again for the long silence but let’s get right to welcoming a few newcomers that I’ve pulled out of a hat. I wish I could mention everyone but no one wants to listen to me blather on for 6 pages so here’s a sample…

We’ll start with a 2-for-1 because we’re talking about Rogue Natural Designs and Jacoby and Rogue Paint Removal. Both are owned by Karen over in Portland Oregon who is just spectacular. Rogue Natural Designs specializes in stone masonry landscaping designs and their work is just stunning. Take a quick peak at their site and you’ll see what I’m saying. Jacoby and Rogue Paint Removal is, as you would expect, another of her companies but specializes in exterior paint removal and restoration in Portland. I recommend a look at their site as well so see some amazing transformations to some homes in the Portland area. Welcome aboard!

Next is Design Wood Floors in Boston MA. I had the pleasure of putting together this site and I was blown away with the hardwood floor installation and repair photos! You simply have to check out the gallery page on their site to see some of the incredible work they’ve done with people’s floors. It’s no wonder they won the Best of Boston award for 2008.

Still in Boston is Randymars Painters and Contractors. I am pretty sure that these folks literally do everything! From painting and pressure washing to drywall and tile they really are a one-stop-shop for home repairs. Give Marco a call if you’re in their neck of the woods…you’ll be glad you did!

Heading south now to Raleigh NC we have Flanner Contracting. Bud’s a real pro when it comes to custom sunrooms and exterior siding. We’re not talking about pulling stuff out of a box and slapping it together…we’re talking about custom, quality additions to people’s homes that are just beautiful. Take a look at his site and see for yourself and if you’re nearby and thinking of how nice it would be to have a bright, sunny new addition, call him up!

All the way back on the west coast is All About Hardwood Floors. These folks are all about experience and quality. With decades of experience with hardwood floors they’ve seen it all and the work they produce is spectacular. They can turn even the most destroyed flooring into something that looks brand new. Welcome, it’s great to have you with us!

Last out of the hat, but certainly not least, is The Gathering Promotions. Their site is hot off the presses having just launched yesterday but Shanon has one interesting business. She can do and see things that I don’t even understand but her energy matrix art and psychic reading talents are incredible. She can really help you out if you need guidance and insight into your life and what’s coming. She’s written a book called “You Are Wiser Than You Think” as well and you can read the forward right on her sight so take a look, it might be just what you’re looking for. She and her team do large events as well so if you’re planning a get-together and are looking for some unique and engaging entertainment, call her up!

Well I know this went a little long, but hopefully you’ll all welcome the new additions to the group. Thanks for reading and special thanks for our new members!

PPC vs SEO…Which Is Right for Me?

Last Updated: August 7, 2008

I thought we should follow up our last post with some more information about PPC and SEO campaigns and specifically how to decide which is right for you.

In the world of Internet marketing you can either pay your way to the top through a Pay Per Click (PPC) campaign, or you can work your way there with a Search Engine Optimization (SEO) campaign. Both can be effective, but there are benefits and drawbacks to each method.
These two graphs show the relationship between the amount of money spent and the traffic obtained for each traffic generation method. As you look at these graphs, think in terms of renting vs. owning a home.

Notice that with PPC (just like with renting), you can enter the market quickly, but over time you have to increase the amount you spend to sustain the volume of traffic. This is because more businesses are moving their advertising efforts online as local search happens less in the yellow pages each year. Evidence of this is supported by the fact that Google’s ad revenue has been doubling year over year.

Key points about PPC:
• More people bidding for the limited positions continually drives up your cost.
• Anyone willing to spend enough money can bump your business out of the rankings by out-bidding you.
• Because your position is “rented,” you are always at risk of being outbid.
• Gives immediate results with decreasing value over time.

An SEO program from Prospect Genius is more similar to home ownership. Your investment of time and money buys equity in the rankings. This means that over time it becomes harder for others to bump your business from it’s position, giving you a lasting and sustainable advantage.

Key points about SEO:
• Cost remains the same while traffic increases.
• You build a sustainable advantage over time.
• Your cost per customer is almost always lower with SEO.
• Provides increasing value, especially after the ramp-up period.

Why Doesn't Prospect Genius Focus on PPC?

Last Updated: March 30, 2008

Many of you have asked us why our program doesn’t emphasize pay-per-click advertising. Since the question is both very good, and very popular, I’d like to take a moment to explain some things that many people are not aware of.

It’s clear that small business owners all over the country are astute and familiar with the latest trend in advertising, but they need a little insider information to help clear up this confusion. As someone who spent more than 3 years working for a venture capital backed company that focused on selling PPC campaign management solutions, I feel it’s my duty to spill the beans on the failings of the model.

Background – How does PPC Work?:

PPC advertising, in short, allows businesses to bid on key words and phrases that people might enter into a search engine. Though the rules are complicated, in its simplest form, the more you bid, the higher your ad places. You are billed by the search engine for every time someone clicks on your ad.

The Benefits of the PPC Model:

The best part of PPC advertising is that you’ll see instant gains in the number of visitors to your site. You can turn it on and off at will, and you can target specific things like competitor names and products.

What’s the Catch?:

The major failing in this model can be traced to one root cause. There is no price break given to resellers. Despite the fact that nearly every other industry on the planet offers resellers a discounted price, Google, Yahoo! and the others simply do not. The PPC service providers have to earn a profit to stay in business, and usually this means higher costs passed on to the advertisers. Since many PPC service providers mark up the cost of the clicks as part of the service, it means you pay more for the clicks they generate than you’d pay if you set it up yourself. For example, the company I mentioned before would add a 50% mark-up on the cost of the clicks generated, so a $1.00 click becomes $1.50, taking a much bigger bite out of your wallet, without adding value.

Making this problem worse still are two remaining factors. Part of the complex raking algorithms includes evaluating the topical relevance of the site that the ad is sending customers to. Most of the providers, including the aforementioned company use single-page landing sites to receive the customers sent from the ad. Since these are only a single page, the relevancy scores are typically lower, so the search engines make you pay more for each click. After all this, you have to battle with the fact that a landing page has lower conversion rates than well-designed websites. So in short, you pay a premium price, on top of a marked-up price, only to get fewer customers.

It is also very important to realize that the goals of the PPC provider are not necessarily the goals of the advertiser. The advertiser is looking for more customers, but the PPC provider doesn’t typically get paid on the volume of customers sent, but rather on the volume of visitors sent. The metrics typically used to measure success of a PPC campaign are things like Click-Through-Rate (CTR) which measures the ratio of impressions (number of times the ad is shown) to clicks (number of times the ad was clicked). That has very little to do with the rate at which those clicks turn into customers, and that’s where the real problem starts to occur because the business owner doesn’t need visitors, they need customers.

So PPC advertising is bad?:

Actually, NO! It can be a very, very valuable tool, if done properly, and in conjunction with other efforts. There is a big difference between using PPC to supplement your online advertising, and making it your only source. The Prospect Genius approach is different in 4 major ways:

  • Our microsites are highly relevant, so your clicks are cheaper.
  • We do NOT mark up the clicks.
  • The PPC campaign is strictly supplemental to the standard offering
  • We provide ROI tracking

We find great value in using the PPC strategy to target competitor names and brands, and other items that are very difficult to meaningfully work into your microsite, but the real value is in the ability to tell how many customers are coming out of the program because that’s what really matters!

Conclusion:

I am sure by now you’re eyes have glazed over, so I’ll leave you with a final summary. PPC, when done carefully and as part of a greater online advertising campaign is a valuable tool. However, you can lose your shirt if you aren’t careful.

We love your questions, and are here to help. If you want answers to anything that’s even vaguely related to our service, feel free to post to this blog, or email us at info@ and we’ll be happy to help.
