Navigating the New Google Business Profile Reinstatement Process

Last Updated: February 8, 2024

As small business owners, our online profiles are pivotal in connecting with our audiences. A suspended Google Business Profile or a disabled Google Business Profile can be quite a setback. But, with change on the horizon regarding Google’s appeal procedures, it’s crucial to stay updated and be prepared.

Currently, Google is launching a revamped reinstatement process for disabled or suspended Google Business Profiles in the European Union. Though this new reinstatement process is currently only in use in the EU, it’s anticipated to extend globally, affecting American businesses in due time.

Old Vs. New: A Quick Comparison

Previously, if your business profile was suspended, you would respond by filling out a straightforward form. This form would have you confirm some basic details about your business’s operations and give you a chance to explain why you believed your profile should be reinstated. Upon submission, your form would be examined by a technician. This is the appeals process currently in place for Google Business Profiles based in the USA (as of the date of posting). A glaring issue with this current appeals process is that, should your appeal get denied, the feedback you’ll receive from Google is frustratingly vague. A redeeming feature, however, is that you’ll have the ability to re-appeal.

In contrast, the incoming system promises enhanced clarity. Businesses that find themselves in violations of Google’s quality guidelines will be directly informed of which policy they’ve violated. Unfortunately, though, it’s a double-edged sword. While transparency is heightened, room for errors is slim. Under the new system, appeals are becoming a one-shot endeavor, paired with a stringent 60-minute window for providing relevant business documents.

The Renewed Process in a Nutshell:

Should you find your business profile suspended or disabled in the future, this is how the new appeals process will go down:

  1. You’ll be alerted via email about the suspension. This email will indicate the breached guideline and provide a link to Google’s quality guidelines document, where you’ll be able to learn more about how your profile has violated Google’s policies and how you can amend your profile.
  2. Take a moment to gather up some evidence that your business’s profile has a right to be listed on Google. Nine times out of ten, Google will request that you provide a copy of your business’s license or registration documents, so that they can verify that your business actually exists. If you do not have these documents, you may be able to substitute a utility bill relevant to your business, such as your phone bill. Be sure that this utility bill contains your business’s name and address!
  3. To begin the appeals process, you’ll need to log in to a Google account that has access to the Google Business Profile in question.
  4. Once you’ve accessed your profile, you’ll only have 60 minutes to fill out your appeal and attach the relevant documents we advised you gather in step #2. This is why it’s so important that you have these documents handy before you begin your appeal. This time limit is strict, and if your appeal gets denied for lack of evidence, you will not have the opportunity to try again!
  5. Once your appeal is submitted, sit tight while an employee from Google reviews your case. You will receive an email notification with the results.

Bear in mind—

  • You will, unfortunately, only have one chance to get this right. It’s really important that you follow our instructions to the letter. Don’t be afraid to call us with any questions prior to your appeal!
  • Despite the fact that the 60-minute time limit is strict, there’s no visible timer in the window. Keep an eye on the clock and make sure you don’t exceed that time limit!
  • You can submit multiple proof documents if you’d like. To accomplish this, you will need to use a zip file.

Pros and Cons: Analyzing the Shift

This is a big shake-up in the appeals process for suspended or disabled Google Business Profiles. Here at Prospect Genius, we’re extensively familiar with Google Business Profile appeals. There are a few things about this new process that we’re excited for:
  • Enhanced Transparency: The new system eliminates guesswork, pinpointing the specific policy infringement.
  • Simplification: This streamlined new process will cut back on prolonged back-and-forth exchanges. You’ll submit your appeal, it will be approved or denied, and that will be the end of it.
However, we’re sure you’ve identified some obvious pitfalls on the new appeal process. This is what we’re concerned about:
  • Limited Appeals: Gone are the days of multiple appeal attempts. Business owners will only have one opportunity to get this right, and may risk losing the ability to have their business profile listed on Google if they fail. We won’t mince words here— not having a Google Business Profile is a huge detriment to your business’s online reputation, and should be avoided at all costs.
  • Time Pressure: The 60-minute evidence submission window is strict, and extremely problematic if you’re under-prepared.

Staying Ahead of the Curve

It’s absolutely vital for American small business owners to anticipate this shift. Familiarize yourself with Google’s guidelines and ensure your profile stays compliant. Maintain updated, easily accessible documentation proving your business’s legitimacy. This foresight can be a lifesaver, ensuring you’re not caught off-guard when the 60-minute clock starts ticking.

Lastly, should you find yourself navigating the murky waters of a suspended or disabled Google Business Profile, remember you’re not alone. Prospect Genius stands ready to assist. With our expertise, we can guide you through the reinstatement process, ensuring your online presence remains robust and uninterrupted.

How Will Mass Tech Layoffs in 2023 Impact Your Google Business Profile?

Last Updated: February 8, 2024

When tech companies lay off workers, end users also pay the price. What will a reduced tech workforce mean for your Google Business Profile?

Downward Trends in Tech Jobs

Technology is an ever-increasing part of our lives, but that boom in usage is not always mirrored within the tech industry itself. In late 2022 there were mass layoffs across companies large and small, including tech behemoths Google and Amazon. Experts project that significant layoffs will continue into 2023 as companies readjust and reorient post-pandemic.

The Continuing Digital Age

Even as tech companies downsize, the demand for their services is only increasing. We live in a digital age and, as any business owner will tell you, having a strong online presence is critical for survival.

For example, most businesses, regardless of size, benefit from having a Google Business Profile (GBP). This profile communicates essential information—such as your address, hours, and contact information—across Google products including Maps and Search.

Having an active—and accurate—GBP can mean the difference between keeping the lights on and shutting the doors for good, as this is a key way that companies attract and communicate with customers. As Google downsizes, what does that mean for businesses that rely on the GBP platform?

Reduced Workforce, Reduced Responsiveness

There have been a number of issues with the GBP platform in recent months, from unwarranted account suspensions to inaccurate auto-updates to business information. While these may not be directly connected to the recent layoffs at Google, the long wait times to resolve the issues likely do. It comes down to basic supply and demand—there’s a high demand for customer support and Google may not have the workers they need to provide it.

As the tech industry continues to downsize in 2023, GBP users could be in for more trouble in the form of bugs, unjust profile suspensions, long wait times, and more. Ideally, Google and the rest of the field will find the right balance of employees to services, but it may be a painful journey for consumers along the way.

If you’re dealing with a suspended Google Business Profile or a lack of response from Google, the team at Prospect Genius can help. We have over 10 years of experience helping clients restore their GBP and have a 95% success rate reinstating suspended profiles. Don’t let long wait times and unresponsive representatives bog you down—call Prospect Genius today and get your Google Business Profile back where it should be.

Disappearing Reviews: Another Google Business Profile Bug

Last Updated: February 8, 2024

A new bug in the Google Business Profile system causes reviews to disappear, negatively affecting business’ visibility and online presence.

Having a robust online presence is a must for any business today, and customer reviews are a huge part of that. Reviews help establish a business’ credibility and serve as a direct connection with customers.

If a company has a Google Business Profile (GBP), their reviews are linked to that account. That usually works well—until, as happened this November, there’s a bug in the system.

Last month, business’ reviews started disappearing for no discernible reason. This comes on the tail of the October GBP bug that led to the unwarranted suspension of hundreds of accounts. As soon as the suspension bug was resolved, it looks like the reviews bug was brewing.

A woman staring at her laptop, confused

This issue of disappearing reviews seems to be linked to a Suggested Edits update. Google autogenerates these updates and requires listing managers to manually reject changes they don’t want (which is particularly troublesome since many of the auto-generated updates end up being inaccurate). In November, these updates—which are supposed to only change business information—also started removing reviews from business’ online listings.

So, what happened? It appears that the Suggested Edits updates also changed the CID number of profiles at the same time. The CID is an identifier assigned by Google to specify a business’ location within Google’s own systems.

When the CID gets changed, Google then sees the new number as a new listing. This disassociates the listing from the original GBP and the existing reviews. It also seems to eventually make the reviews disappear altogether.

We may not know why this is happening, but everyone can agree that it’s bad news! When a business loses reviews, it diminishes their online presence, damages their reputation, and erases hard-earned customer trust.

The good news: it should be possible to reinstate any lost reviews—as long as you know your original CID number as well as the new one. If your business has been impacted by this bug, you’ll need to reach out to Google via a GBP support forum, state what happened, and furnish both the new and old CID numbers. With that information, Google should be able to retrieve and reinstate your reviews.

You’ll also want to make sure that your business information is accurate since the GBP Suggested Edits update that started the problem may also have put incorrect business details in your profile. You can do this by clicking “Actions” within your account.

Moving forward, consider keeping your own records of customer reviews in case there are future issues with the GBP system. Whether you set up a system to get automatic emails any time there’s a new review, or you build a spreadsheet to track the details, having that information saved on your end will give you a solid backup and peace of mind.

Reinstatement Troubles Continue In Aftermath of Google Business Profile Suspension Bug

Last Updated: February 8, 2024

Having a Google Business Profile (GBP) is standard practice for most business in 2022. This online listing helps potential clients find key business information like services, location, hours, and phone number when they search the web using Google Search or Maps.

Unfortunately, in October of 2022, there was a bug in the GBP system. Usually, businesses are able to perform minor edits to update their GBP without incident. In October, however, hundreds of business owners had their GBP suspended for no discernible reason.

Actions that resulted in account suspension included:

  • Editing business name
  • Editing hours
  • Editing a description
  • Marking a business as temporarily closed
  • Adding website parameters
  • Clicking the verify button

While the suspension process is designed to safeguard the integrity of GBP listings, suspension for the above actions was unusual. It’s normal for businesses to make small edits to their profiles in order to reflect updates and changing business information. The fact that these minor edits caused account suspension meant that something was wrong on Google’s end.

Frustrated woman gesturing to laptop

While Google has confirmed that the bug causing the unexpected suspensions has been resolved as of the afternoon of Friday, October 21, 2022, the trouble is far from over. Every account that was suspended has to go through a verification process in order to have its listing restored.

This means that a business with a suspended account has to function without a GBP until the verification process is complete. Unfortunately, the large number of suspensions that occurred in October have caused a significant backlog within the Google support network. Some business with suspended accounts are having to wait 25–30 business days for account reinstatement.

Additionally, the verification process is rarely straightforward. Businesses typically have to email back and forth with Google numerous times, providing everything from proof of address to business licenses to confirm the accuracy and authenticity of their GBP.

With Google having approximately 80% of the search market share, not having an active GBP can be a massive blow to a business. It means loss of visibility and subsequent loss of clients and revenue.

GBP suspension and long reinstatement times can also mean loss of SEO ranking for affected businesses. Both of these issues can have long-term negative consequences on business visibility and activity well beyond the suspension timeframe.

Resolving a GBP suspension can be a time-consuming and difficult process for even the most savvy business owner. If you need help navigating the reinstatement process, call the team at Prospect Genius for our GBP Rescue service.

Prospect Genius has over 10 years of experience navigating the Google framework and we have a 95% success rate in recovering Google Business Profiles. Call today and let us help you get your GBP back on the web where it belongs!
