What Not to Do With Google Business Profile Updates: A Cautionary Tale

Last Updated: September 16, 2026

We all know that if you want any kind of visibility in local search, the suits at Google expect you to feed their machine with your time and effort. No one loves it, but it’s Google’s world and we just live in it, right? We add photos, publish posts, update our information, showcase recent work, keep the profile current, and on and on. This has been drilled into small business owners’ heads for years. Unfortunately, it’s just the price of admission these days, despite the fact that no one has spare time to burn on this stuff.

So eventually, you pull out your phone, open the gallery, see the hundreds of photos that have piled up, and think: “Fine, Google. You want photos? Here are your photos. All 300 of them.”

Upload everything. Knock out a pile of Posts while you are already in there. Check the box. Get it off the list for another six months. It is compliance, but with just a tiny bit of a middle finger attached.

Look, we get it. This is one of 50 things you need to do today and it ranks 51 on the list. The problem is that 300 photos uploaded on Tuesday still count as 300 photos uploaded on Tuesday, not as six months of updates. Sadly, you cannot prepay six months of Google Business Profile maintenance.

Why Do We Have To Do This Stuff?

Stepping back, let’s think about what Google actually wants and why they are trying to get everyone to behave this way. They want “freshness” because their users (people searching, aka your customers) want freshness. People, and therefore Google, want to see that you’re regularly doing the work they’re looking for. They want to see that you do this stuff every day, which makes you an expert. They want to know that you didn’t go out of business two years ago and just leave your profiles active. That’s what’s really driving all these seemingly insane demands for your time and effort in the form of photos and posts.

So Can’t I Just Batch This Stuff Up To Save Time?

Here is where things get a little more interesting. We recently had a client upload hundreds of images to their Google Business Profile all at once. Shortly afterward, the listing was suspended, and he was calling us for help. Was the massive photo upload definitely what caused it? We cannot say for certain, but the timing suggests that it likely played a role.

Of course, there’s no published rule from Google saying that it’s strictly forbidden to upload hundreds of photos at once. However, there’s also very little upside to even trying.

If you have a large repository of photos to pull from, that’s a great asset, but using all of it in one day is a waste. Think of these updates as an ongoing record of the work your business is doing. Show a little of what has been happening lately, then save the rest for later. You are much better served by a steady stream of smaller updates than one giant dump.

What About Batch Updating Google Posts?

Same basic answer.

Publishing 30 or 50 Posts today does not give you months of future Posts. It gives you a whole lot of Posts today. There is also a separate reason not to go nuts with these. Google’s content policies prohibit repetitive content that does not add useful information.

So if your bulk posting session turns into 40 slightly different versions of “Call us today!”, you are not doing yourself any favors.

Save the material. Use it when it is relevant. There is no prize for emptying the whole bucket at once.

So what should you actually do with your Google Business Profile?

Keep this much simpler than the marketing industry sometimes makes it sound. When you have something worth showing, pick a few good photos. If you have a good before-and-after, even better. Upload them and add a short Post explaining what the customer is looking at. That is it.

You do not need a grand content calendar. You do not need to turn every update into a campaign. You do not need to spend half an afternoon writing copy for Google.

Just open up your phone and pick 3 to 5 good photos from a recent job. Upload those and write a couple of sentences about them. Just say what you did, what city & state you did it in, and why it stands out for you.

Next week, or in a couple of weeks, do the same thing with something else.

Five minutes. Done.

That is the routine. And no, we are not going to tell you that it absolutely must happen every seven days at 10:00 a.m.

If weekly works, great. If every couple of weeks is realistic, do that. The goal is to have a manageable process that keeps useful, recent material appearing on your profile without turning Google Business Profile management into your second career.

Batch the prep, spread out the publishing

This is probably the easiest way to make the whole thing less annoying. You can absolutely batch the work behind the scenes. Keep taking photos. Throw the good ones into a folder. Sort them all at once when you have time. Write a few short captions in one sitting if you want. Just do not feel compelled to publish the entire stockpile while you are there.

If there are 100 useful photos sitting on your phone, stop looking at them as a backlog you need to clear. They are a content bank.

You already did the hard part. You took the pictures. Now use a few at a time, keep the profile useful for people checking out your business, and avoid creating one giant burst of activity for no good reason.

Then close the tab and get back to your actual job.
